A man who was caught in a fake Viagra advertisement being displayed on the streets of Peshawar has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison after being found guilty of supplying false information on a website.
Kamal Bajib Bajib, a resident of Shahirable, who owns a retail shop in Peshawar, was sentenced to one year of probation, one month of supervised release and one year of house arrest in the case.
Bajib is currently serving a four-month term in prison, and his co-defence will be suspended for six months after he pleaded guilty to the fake advertisement.
Bajib’s lawyer, Ahmed Mirza, said he had been searching for a long term fixer in the fake Viagra advertisement for more than two years.
He said Bajib had been supplying fake information to a website which he had been using for more than two years.
He had received reports of fake Viagra ads and he was concerned that the advertisement he was using was fake.
“We are not satisfied with the advertisements and are worried about the fact that some people are using them for a sale. But we are concerned with the fact that there is a long term fixer for these advertisements,” Mirza told Dawn.
Bajib had a lengthy criminal history, was in prison, had to pay a fine and a short jail term.
He was also sentenced to three months in jail and the fine was reduced to one month.
The case was being investigated by a team from the Royal Army Hospital in Jhelum and a team from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in Peshawar.
Bajib’s lawyer said the website had been used to advertise the drug ‘Ajanta Pharma’, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Ajanta Pharma was launched in 2003 as a ‘combination drug’ for erectile dysfunction.
Ajanta Pharma is an Indian pharmaceutical company based in Chittorungwala.
Bajib had been using the website as a way to advertise the drug since its launch.
The advertisement appeared in the News Journal of Jhelum on March 4.
Bajib had been receiving reports of fake Viagra ads.
He said the ad was “a commercial for a chemical called Kamagra, used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction”.
Bajib was convicted of one count of supplying the false information. Bajib’s lawyer said there were several other cases of fake Viagra advertisement.
He said the advertisements were being used as an advertisement for the drug.
“The advertisement appeared in the News Journal of Jhelum, which has more than 500 articles for the website. It is written by a pharmacist. The advertisement is advertised to the general public and the company has no plans to promote the drug in the market. The advertisement is an advertisement for a chemical called Kamagra.
